Web Documentary – NFB HIGHRISE – OUT MY WINDOW
2011 Winner: International Emmy Award in Digital, Non-Fiction2010 Winner: IDFA Doclab Award for Digital Storytelling
2010 Doc/Fest Sheffield Innovation Award Nominee
On this project, I was the Technical Director, working with my colleagues at the Highrise project by the National Film Board of Canada (trivia: my relationship with the NFB now dates a decade+ back...I really ought to get them an anniversary ring soon...). Out My Window is a massive interactive documentary, comprised of journalist and user-submitted content from around the globe.
My role as technical director was both as content overseer / coordinator and also was involved in the creative process. I was solely in charge of all post-production supervision and digital asset management, having to oversee thousands of photos and video assets, keeping track of their progress from photo, to animation, to photo collage, to video edit (and then encoding / formatting all of them for their intended use) in a massive spreadsheet that would make your eyes bleed. Each bit of content had to go through the gamut: post audio facilities, graphic and design, animation studios, video editors, web video encoding, etc. etc.
I also dove in head first, editing a couple video segments, designing and doing the photoshop work to create the photo mosaics for each floor, helping to craft the GUI and user experience, as well as occasionally diving into the finer technical frameworks and assisting on the QA procedure.
See it in action! And check out my shiny Emmy statue in the photo gallery :) highrise.nfb.ca/outmywindow
